Onion (Allium cepa L), a popular vegetable all over the world, has great economic importance due to its medicinal as well as dietetic values. Basal rot disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae is one of the most destructive soil-borne diseases of onion that causes important yield losses in all growing areas of the world. The causal organism infects the basal stem plate of the bulb and eventually kills the entire plant through degradation of the basal plate. Synthetic pesticides are generally used to combat this menace. However, these agro-chemicals are responsible for toxic residues and the development of resistance in pathogens. Many recent studies show that natural compounds of plants can be used as alternative to synthetic chemicals for the management of plant diseases. The present study was, therefore, designed to evaluate the antifungal potential of Chenopodium album for the management of F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae. Onion (Allium cepa L.), family Alliaceae, is the second most important horticulture crop all over the world. Basal plate rot disease of onion is caused by common soil fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae that severely deteriorates the produce. Chemical control of soil-borne pathogens provides certain degree of control but at the same time they have bad effects on environment. Therefore, in recent years biological control of plant pathogens has been considered as a potential alternative strategy. In the present study, antifungal activity of methanolic fruit, stem and root extracts of Withania somnifera was evaluated against F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae. Methanolic extracts of leaf and root were fractionated using four organic solvents i.e. n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. Chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions of methanolic root extract and ethyl acetate fraction of leaf extract showed highest antifungal activity against the target fungal pathogen. In pot trials, combined application of Trichoderma harzianum and W. somnifera leaf manure significantly reduced the incidence and severity of the basal plate rot of onion. Efficacy of various biocontrol agents and soil organic amendments were evaluated for their potential to manage the basal rot of onion caused by Fusarium oxysporum.f.sp.cepae. Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma harzianum and Pseudomonas sp. were collected from different onion growing areas of Tamil Nadu and they were tested for their antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum.f.sp.cepae by dual culture technique. Among the tested isolates of Trichoderma sp., T. harzianum (TH3) recorded the maximum (82.77%) inhibition. Among the sixty two isolates of Pseudomonas sp. Pf 12 significantly exerted highest (74.68) per cent reduction of mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum.f.sp.cepae. Among the different organic amendments, mahua cake (10%) significantly recorded maximum 61.00 per cent reduction of mycelial growth over control. Consortial formulation of Pf 12 + Pf 27 + TH3 recorded the least disease incidence of basal rot under glass house condition
