In China, the world’s next superpower, life is comfortable for the fortunate few. For others, it’s a hand-to-mouth struggle for a full stomach, a place to live, wages for work done, and freedom to speak openly. In a place where few things are more important than food, “Have you eaten yet?” is another way of saying hello. After traversing the country and meeting its people, Ang shares her delicious experiences with us. She tells of a clandestine cup of salty yak butter tea with a Tibetan monk during a military crackdown and explains how a fluffy spring onion omelet encapsulates China’s drive for rural development. You’ll have lunch with some of the country's most enduring activists, savor meals with earthquake survivors, and get to know a house cleaner who makes the best fried chicken in all of Beijing. Ang bites into the gaping divide between rich and poor, urban and rural reform, intolerance for dissent, and the growing dissatisfaction with those in power. By serving these topics to us one at a time, To the People, Food Is Heaven, provides a fresh perspective beyond the country’s anonymous identity as an economic powerhouse. Ang plates a terrific, wide-ranging feast that is the new China. Have you eaten yet? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Emily Zeller. Blue Lives Matter is a audiobook that explores the line-of-duty deaths suffered by the law enforcement blue family. This audiobook examines the deaths of eight police officers and one police canine in Los Angeles County. The chapters portray the fallen officers and the canine as true heroes who each made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community. The cases include the murder of two officers solved over 40 years later; an officer murdered in front of his young son; two officers kidnapped and taken to an onion field where one officer is executed; an undercover officer murdered during a multi-million dollar drug transaction; an off-duty officer murdered by two gang members while riding his bicycle; and a cop-killer who fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution. Co-authors Steve Cooley and Bob Schirn discuss each case in detail. Each chapter discusses the incident that cost the officer his life. The court proceedings are reviewed, including victim impact testimony of the effect of the officer's death on family members and fellow officers. A "lessons learned" segment in each chapter is designed to increase officer safety and awareness of dangerous situations. Steve Cooley is a career prosecutor who served three full terms as the District Attorney of Los Angeles County. He was a reserve police officer for LAPD. He is uniquely positioned to discuss his involvement in each case and eminently qualified to provide perspectives and opinions on each case. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Doug Greene. A large number of cultural practices and environmental conditions affect bulbing, flowering and seed development in onion. The main factors affecting seed yields are high temperature and water stress during pollination and seed development. The quality of seed is not good enough and most of the times there have been problems related to germination capacity of the seeds and true to typeness. The problem is further exacerbated by the short shelf life of onion seed (one year under favorable condition). This book is largely based upon investigations by the researchers and reviews onion work on the effects of temperature and photoperiod, soil conditions, seedling size, bulb size, set size, plant density, plant nutrition, water supply, plant hormones, weed infestation, pollination, and genes responses that affect bulbing and flowering to provide the readers with an applied field-based perspective (older research) with some of the newer research that has been done. The present work is designed for the use of investigators and producers as well as to meet the needs of students.
